The history of the Palėvenė Monastery dates back to 1676, when the first Dominican monks settled here with the financial support of Laurynas Mykolas Počobut-Odlanickis and his wife Marijonas from the Siesicki family. The monastery ensemble consisted of several brick and wooden buildings for various purposes, surrounded by a high brick wall (eight “houses” are usually mentioned in documents). From the point of view of architecture and art history, the most valuable building in the ensemble is the brick St. Dominic Church, construction of which began in 1676. It is believed that the interior of the church has survived from the second half of the 18th century, as the previous one was destroyed during the Northern War. The interior of the Palėvenė Church with eight altars is one of the most original examples of the so-called folk baroque in Lithuania. Currently, in the restored monastery barn, you can taste monk dishes and homemade beer brewed in the Kupiškis region. You can also try writing Latin with a quill pen in the barn, just like monks used to do in the past.
