The beginning of the journey
We start the tour in the heart – Varpo a. 4, Skapiškis . This is the place from which the path to the secrets of the town opens.
What will you experience and see?
I invite you to take a look around the town of Skapiškis, located on the old trade route from Ukmergė to Livonia. The deep antiquity of this area is commemorated by the Alka Island on Lake Mituva, where a pagan sanctuary once flourished and an altar burned. Here you will learn about the origin of the area and in whose honor it was named. Skapiškis is rich in its history, buildings of unique architecture, personalities and legends originating from this region. And who can dispute these legends, embedded in the works of Lithuanian classics...
Not far from the town lies Švedukalnis, one of the largest graves of Finnish soldiers in Lithuania. 220 soldiers died of typhus in the military hospital that operated here after the 1831 uprising. This area has its own history, the name of which has changed.
The region also surprises with its exceptional monuments with famous stories. One of them is the unique Monument of Sobriety, built in 1862 and inspired by the sermons of Bishop Motiejus Valančius, which makes Skapiškis famous.
We will end our journey at a symbolic place - the crossroads of the old road, from which most of the old photos of the town were taken.
