One-day/3-hour program visiting the most famous places of Kupiškis city, the castle mound and the Kupiškis lagoon.
Description:
We invite you to an impressive journey through Kupiškis, where deep history, modern art and breathtaking nature intertwine. During this program, we will visit the most important architectural objects of the city, get acquainted with the rich heritage of the region in the museum and immerse ourselves in the grandeur of the hillfort and Kupiškis lagoon, shrouded in legends of giants. This is a walk that reveals why Kupiškis is called the land of giants.
Excursion program:
-
Kupiškis Church of the Ascension of Christ: this is one of the largest churches in Lithuania, built between 1900 and 1914. Historians believe that this place was a Lithuanian cult or burial place in ancient times.
-
Laurynas Gucevičius Square and its musical fountain: this square has long been famous as a market and shopping area, and was later named after the famous architect Laurynas Gucevičius. In the warm season, visitors are delighted by the musical fountain - a modern work of architecture, engineering and art. The synthesis of water, light and music turns into an impressive spectacle, in which the colors of the water jets and lighting change according to the sound of the music.
-
Former Jewish synagogue: this building was not only a house of prayer, but also a place for community meetings and Torah studies. Despite all the historical hardships, the synagogue functioned until the tragic beginning of the German occupation. In 2004, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the building, which contains the names of 820 Jews of Kupiškis who died (this list is still being completed).
-
Works by sculptor Henrikas Orakauskas and contemporary street art: the city spaces are decorated with more than two dozen works by this famous artist. During the tour, we will see such works as "The Tree of the Baltic World", "Lion and Kupa", "Descending Angel", "Mercury", "Avinėli, Pasipurtyk" and other modern street art accents.
-
Kupiškis Museum: in the museum we will get acquainted with the unique wedding traditions of the ancient Kupiškis people. Here we will also see a collection of traditional Lithuanian clothing and accessories from the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, as well as a special exhibit - almost 4,000-year-old bull horns.
-
Kupiškis Lagoon: this is the fourth largest artificial body of water in Lithuania, formed in 1984 by damming the Lėvens River. The lagoon is famous not only for the witty names of the islands – Uošvės Liežuvis (a dendrological park has been established there) and Žentos Slėptuvas, but also for the sports competitions and festivals held here. The area has a well-developed infrastructure, and there is a campsite offering accommodation in cabins on the water or in a cozy pine forest.
-
Kupiškis (Aukštupėnai) hillfort: the tour will culminate with a visit to the hillfort. According to legend, it was built by giants while they were smoking pipes, and in ancient times, a Baltic tribe called the Seljuks lived in these areas. Here, we will symbolically "smoke" our pipes and sing the sonorous Kupiškis anthem together.
