Ripka is a Lithuanian game, which dates to the 17th century.
Ritinis is also described in M. Valančius's work "Palangos Juzė": "The four of us stopped on the one side, four on the other, and when one of us hit ripka (a roller) with ritmuša (a stick), the roller flew, humming. The poor thing did not rest until it burst..."
The roller was made of rough birch and was binded with a metal hoop. In Kupiškis, as well as in Seinai, Molėtai, Užventis and Tauragė, it is still called ripka. In the Klaipėda region, Lithuanians called it rifle, in Leipalingis – ritule, in Iglaukai – ritinis, and in southeastern Lithuania – katilka.
We invite you to try playing ripka together with the president of ritinis sport club of Kupiškis and educator Vidmantas Liubomirskas in summer. If you are interested in this education, call on the number provided.
The premises of the Kupiškis District Physical Education and Sports Center have a permanent exhibition “History of ritinis (ripka), Lithuanian folklore game, in Kupiškis”. Here you can see awards and other exhibits.
